A unique YMCA community outreach initiative sparked by West Lincoln Council launched recently with the YMCA of Niagara offering bus service from three pick-up locations in West Lincoln serving YMCA members attending the new Niagara West YMCA.

This initiative which is a free service for YMCA Members, was informed by a community consultation conducted last year, that provided advice on bus stop sites, policies, schedules and more.

Shawna Kozun, YMCA Centre Manager is excited about this renewed initiative. “we’re always looking for ways to increase opportunities for people to participate” says Kozun, adding “This service is a unique way to ensure that members living in West Lincoln have easier access to their YMCA”.

The Niagara West YMCA Bus service is offered to YMCA Members on Wednesdays afterschool and Saturday mornings.  These times are aligned with the YMCA program schedule that offers the broadest program choices catering to families and people of all ages.

Designed to ensure safety, there are a number of important protocols that bus riders are asked to keep in mind.  Children under age 10 for example should be accompanied by an adult guardian both on the bus and at the YMCA.  Bus Riders will also be asked to show their YMCA Membership card.  In inclement weather, the Bus Riders are asked to call the YMCA or check the website in the event the bus is cancelled.  Parents please note the Aquatic Admission Criteria for children, as it relates to participation in YMCA Family and Open Swim.  Each season the bus schedule may be revised to accommodate changing program schedules and usage patterns.

Thanks to the cooperation of two community partners who have offered their sites for a “Y Bus Stop” – St. Ann’s Community Centre and the Township of West Lincoln – the following three locations will offer bus services running in a continuous loop over a 5 hour period.  The Y Bus Stop sites are at Caistor Community Centre, 9184 Regional Road 65, Caistor Centre; Silverdale Community Centre, 4610 Sixteen Road, St. Ann’s; and at the West Lincoln Arena, 177 West Street, West Lincoln.
