Port Colborne — With a vision and commitment to support the health and wellness of generations to come, the City of Port Colborne Council and the YMCA of Niagara volunteer Board of Directors put their stamp of approval this week on the long term agreement that will see the YMCA to manage the “warm side” of the Vale Health and Wellness Centre expected to open in the winter 2013.
“We appreciate the city’s innovative approach that positions the YMCA to better reach out to all residents of the greater Port Colborne area, offering opportunities for volunteerism and employment along with a wide range of programs and services for all ages, abilities and income levels” explains Jason Brown, CEO, YMCA of Niagara. “The YMCA is committed to providing a quality YMCA experience that is sustainable and continues to be relevant to changing community needs for generations to come.”
The 20 year renewable agreement allows the YMCA to offer services primarily within the aquatic centre, double gymnasium, play centre and training room serving an estimated 2800 people at full capacity, of which an estimated 67% will join as families. Through the YMCA financial assistance program, an estimated 25% of YMCA members will receive support to participate through a confidential process.
Morgan Cooper, a Port Colborne resident who is currently active with her one year old son at the Niagara Centre YMCA in Welland, shared with council the impact a new YMCA will have on her family’s life. “I love to be in a position to make a difference in the lives of others and I know that the YMCA serves the community as a whole and makes it stronger,” notes Morgan. “As a new parent, I take enormous comfort knowing that the YMCA will be here to add to my son Logan’s independence and socialization as he grows older.”
The YMCA will provide a wide range of YMCA membership services utilizing the aquatic centre that includes both a leisure pool and a lane pool, a double gymnasium, a play centre for young children, three change rooms and a fitness centre. The YMCA will be part of the fully accessible Vale Health and Wellness Centre. Detailed information about the YMCA program offerings and staff/volunteer opportunities will be available closer to the opening date.
