Zehrs Give A Little, Help a Lot & YMCA Strong Kids Campaign Working Together to Build the Health of our Community

From June 15 to 23, local Zehrs stores will be raising funds for kids in the community.  Zehrs’ cashiers in St. Catharines, Welland and Niagara Falls will be inviting shoppers to add $2 to their grocery bill to help to send a kid to a YMCA Day Camp this summer. All donations generated will remain and be used in our community.

Children and youth are not getting enough active play – especially outdoors. Forty-six per cent of kids are getting three hours or less of active play per week, including weekends.[1] The proportion of Canadian kids who play outside after school dropped 14 per cent over the last Decade.[2]

The week long campaign is part of Loblaw Companies’ national Give a Little, Help a Lot Campaign.  “As part of our broader corporate investment in enabling young people’s participation in personal development, recreation, health and fitness, Zehrs is pleased to support the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign,” say Valerie Clark and Steve Ali, local Zehrs store managers.

“At the Y, we believe that everyone should be able to participate in programs they need regardless of their ability to pay,” explained Leanne Standryk, volunteer Chair of the YMCA of Niagara Strong Kids Campaign. “Each summer our YMCA provides kids across our community the opportunity to attend summer camp. This is a great opportunity for these kids to learn, engage in active play and have fun. Donations to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign make this possible,” added Leanne. “The YMCA Strong Kids Campaign raises funds to support children, teens and families who can’t afford the full cost of participation in a YMCA program or activity – like day camp or swimming lessons. Last year support of our YMCA Strong Kids Campaign made it possible for us to positively impact 12,000 children and youth across Niagara by assisting them to attend and participate in our programs. We are striving to do more in 2012 to meet the increased level of need in our region.”

“We’re honoured that Zehrs has chosen to raise funds for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign at a time when our community needs it most. We encourage all: members, staff and friends in the community to visit our Zehrs stores across Niagara and make a gift between June 15 and 23,” added Jason Brown, CEO, YMCA of Niagara.
